How many cups of coffee can I brew from a 1 kg bag of beans?

The number of cups depends on how much coffee you use per cup. For example, Vittoria mentions that their 1 kg bag, with a typical espresso-dose of ~21-23 g, yields a certain number of servings.

As a general estimate, depending on dose size, brewing method and whether using single or double shots, you might expect somewhere between 40 and 140 cups from a 1 kg bag.

Tip: If you brew heavier (larger dose or longer draw) your bag will yield fewer cups; light doses and shorter draws stretch it further.

What’s the difference between Arabica and Robusta beans and how does it affect my coffee?

Arabica beans tend to be larger, sweeter in flavour, often more expensive.

Robusta beans generally deliver a stronger “classic coffee” flavour, more body, often higher caffeine and more bitterness.

What this means for you:

If you prefer a smooth, nuanced cup with subtle flavours, you’ll favour Arabica-dominant beans.

If you brew espresso or milk-based drinks and want robust crema, fuller body and stronger flavour, a Robusta-enhanced blend could work well.

Understanding what you like in the cup helps you choose the right blend.

How long do coffee beans last and how should I store them?

Unopened whole-bean packages can remain good for up to 12 months if sealed and stored correctly.

Once you open the bag, the flavour and aroma start to degrade quickly. In many cases, the best flavour period is perhaps one to two weeks after opening.

For a deeper dive, see How Long Do Coffee Beans Last?

How should I store the beans once they arrive?

To keep your coffee at peak freshness and flavour:

Keep them sealed:

Once opened, reseal the bag tightly or store beans in an airtight container.

Avoid air, light, heat and moisture:

Store beans in a cool, dark pantry - not in the fridge or freezer. Temperature fluctuations and moisture can damage the flavour.

Use within 2–4 weeks of opening:

Vittoria’s nitrogen-flushed, one-way valve packaging keeps beans fresh before opening. After opening, for best results, enjoy within a few weeks.

Only grind what you need:

Grinding releases aroma and accelerates oxidation, so grind your beans just before brewing for the freshest flavour.

What roast profile should I choose for different brew methods?

Choosing the right roast can make a big difference to the flavour in your cup. Light, medium and dark roasts don’t just look different - they each bring their own level of brightness, sweetness and intensity.

Here’s a simple guide to help you select the best Vittoria roast for your preferred brew method:

Espresso machines & moka pot

Choose a medium to dark roast. Medium roasts give you a balanced cup with some sweetness and gentle acidity, while dark roasts dial up body and intensity. These profiles extract rich, full-bodied flavours with low perceived acidity and work especially well if you enjoy your espresso with milk. Blends like Espresso, Mountain Grown or Oro are popular choices.

Milk-based coffees (flat white, latte, cappuccino, mocha)

Go for a medium-dark or dark roast. Darker roasts bring a bolder “coffee” flavour, lower acidity and notes like chocolate, nuts, malt or caramel that cut through steamed milk beautifully. This is ideal if you like a rich, classic café-style cup.

Black coffee (espresso, short black, long black, Americano)

If you drink your coffee black, a medium roast is a great starting point. It balances sweetness and acidity while still letting you taste the character of the beans. If you prefer a brighter, more vibrant cup with fruity or floral notes, try a lighter roast; if you like a stronger, more robust flavour and less acidity, lean towards the darker end of the spectrum.

Filter, pour-over or Aeropress

Choose a light to medium roast. Lighter roasts tend to preserve more of the bean’s natural character and can showcase citrus, berry or floral notes, which shine in pour-over and other filter methods. Medium roasts remain very versatile here, giving you a bit more sweetness and body while still staying balanced.

Cold brew

For cold brew, a light or medium roast works well if you enjoy a refreshing, nuanced cup with gentle sweetness and lower perceived acidity. Darker roasts can be used if you prefer a deeper, more chocolatey profile.

If you’re unsure, start with a medium roast – it’s the most versatile and performs well across most brewing styles, from espresso to filter.

For a deeper dive into how roast level affects flavour, see Light, Medium and Dark Coffee Roasts Explained on our blog.

What grind size should I use or how should I adjust for different machines?

Using the right grind size helps you get the best flavour from your Vittoria beans. Here’s a quick guide:

Espresso Machine:

Use a fine grind, similar to table salt. If your shot pours too quickly, grind finer. If it’s too slow or tastes bitter, grind slightly coarser.

Stovetop / Moka Pot:

Use a fine-medium grind—finer than filter, but not as fine as espresso.

Pour-Over / Dripper:

Medium grind, similar to sand. Adjust finer for slower brewers (e.g., V60) and coarser for faster ones (e.g., flat-bottom drippers).

Aeropress:

Somewhere between fine and medium, depending on your recipe.

French Press / Plunger:

Use a coarse grind to avoid muddy or silty brews.

Cold Brew:

A very coarse grind (breadcrumb-like) delivers a smoother, less acidic cold brew.

Tip: Always adjust in small increments - tiny changes in grind size can significantly affect flavour and extraction.

What are the different Australian-style coffee drinks and how do they differ?

Milk-based Coffee Drinks

Flat White: A single espresso shot topped up with steamed milk and a small layer of micro-foam; approx. ⅓ coffee : ⅔ milk.

Cappuccino: Single espresso in a 170 ml cup, filled with steamed milk and foam (often with a sprinkle of chocolate on top).

Caffè Latté (Latte): A taller drink (around 260 ml) – one espresso shot topped up with steamed milk and approx. 1 cm of foamed milk on top.

Piccolo Latté: A smaller format – a single espresso shot in a 4 oz cup or glass, topped with steamed milk (like a mini latte).

Mocha: Starts with a single espresso shot, adds drinking chocolate, then steamed milk - a good choice for those who like chocolate + coffee.

Affogato: One shot of espresso served with two scoops of ice-cream. (While not strictly a milk-based coffee, the blog includes it under the “milk coffee” heading as a dessert-style option.)

Black Coffee Drinks

Espresso (Short Black): A single 30 ml shot of espresso with nothing added.

Long Black: Hot water is poured first (⅔ cup), then a double espresso is added on top, preserving the crema and delivering fuller aromatic taste.

Ristretto: A single dose of espresso but extraction is restricted, so only ~15 ml rather than 30 ml - strong, very smooth, less bitter.

Macchiato: Single shot of espresso “marked” with a very small dash of textured milk. The blog notes that modern Australian cafés may use “long macchiatos” (double-shot + milk) or variants.

How this helps you pick beans:

If you brew mainly milk coffees (flat whites, lattes, cappuccinos, piccolo), look for beans/blends and roast profiles that hold up well against milk - fuller body, bold flavour, good mid to dark roasts.

If you prefer black coffees (espresso, long black, ristretto, macchiato) then beans/blends with pronounced origin character, medium roasts or lighter (if you like brighter flavours), and clarity of flavour will serve you best.

Knowing which drink style you aim for helps you align your bean choice, roast level and flavour profile accordingly - this improves satisfaction and helps you get the most from your purchase.
